Acupuncture is a registered allied health profession. It delivers fast results and has become a popular choice amongst Australians due to the effectiveness of treatment results. But what is it and how does acupuncture work?

What is Acupuncture?

Originating in China approximately 2000 years ago, Acupuncture was a combination of art, intuition, and specific protocols and treatment methods to help with common complaints and disease. How do we know Acupuncture has existed for at least 2 millenniums? Several ancient classical texts have been unearthed and/or preserved, with Chinese historians identifying the earliest writings to be of the Han Dynasty origin (206BC – 220AD). History lesson aside, over the centuries Acupuncture has evolved from the simple practice of placing bian stones/ needles at several locations on the body, to inserting very fine, single use and sterile needles at specific acupuncture points on the body.

How does it work?

The basic concept and theories that the Chinese adopt in their medical material involve harmonising meridians (energy channels in our body) and qi (energy) throughout the channels which can result in relief from pain, sickness and a myriad of other disease, symptoms and conditions otherwise left untreated. From our Toowoomba acupuncture clinic we absolutely live and breathe this theory, and will explain further in depth during treatments how the theory relates to your treatment goals.

You mentioned NEEDLES!? Does Acupuncture hurt?

This is one of the most common questions, especially with patients who already have anxiety or phobia towards needles. Don’t despair! We’ll clear up some common misconceptions about our needles and sensations that they can cause, to put your mind at peace. Our needles are incredibly fine. A picture says a thousand words. You’ll be happy to learn that in most cases you’ll feel only slight sensations. Most patients report little feeling at all, to a dull ache at the site of the needle. Occasionally they report a radiating sensation which more often then not is a positive experience. Needles should not cause prolonged pain. If you feel any discomfort please advise your practitioner.

What Can I Expect In a Typical Treatment?

At our Toowoomba acupuncture clinic we take a full case history with the focus of the main reason you are here to see us. Treatments range from face up and face down treatments and often includes other tools such as cupping, moxibustion and other ancient techniques. Most clients feel completely relaxed after a treatment. At the end of the day we are holistic practitioners and take great pride and joy in seeing the profound shifts and changes in our patients. We tailor each treatment to your needs, and don’t just treat the symptoms, rather the person as a whole.
